Staff Reporter

Seventy-eight of them have been handed over to officials

While 206 were found in the district, only 78 have been handed over to the district administration and they will be preserved according to the scientific methods, District Collector G. The six-day long search for old manuscripts across different villages in 28 mandals in the district had enabled the teams enumerate 206 bundles of manuscripts, said the Chief Planning Officer V. Mahipal here on Saturday.

Speaking at a meeting here, he said that the descendants of the original writers handed over 78 bundles to the Government and another 128 bundles were still in the custody of the owners, he said. District Collector G. Jayalakshmi said that the Union Government had undertaken this massive programme of identifying rare manuscripts and preserving them for the future generations. The National Mission for Manuscripts was formed in February 2003 with the cooperation of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism. The mission had chalked out ambitious plan of preserving manuscripts from across the country.
