Kuala Lumpur: The long-serving head of Malaysia's biggest ethnic Indian party was re-elected to another term on Sunday after running unopposed, but a major fight is expected for the number two position. S. Samy Vellu (70), president of the Malaysian Indian Congress since 1981, was re-elected for another three years, the party said, after nominations for the post closed and there were no other contenders. Mr. Samy's equally long-serving deputy, S. Subramaniam (62) faces a strong challenge from G. Palanivel during party elections in June. Mr. Samy last week declared support for Mr. Palanivel, a move that is set to divide the party because both Mr. Samy and Mr. Subramaniam have core groups of supporters. Mr. Samy, who has often accused Mr. Subramaniam of trying to undermine his leadership, said Mr. Palanivel was the right person to take over as deputy. AP
