Awareness among women on law sought

MADANAPALLE: The VII Additional District Judge (Fast Track) P. Suryanarayana Gowd, speaking on legal assistance at Women's Week celebrations called for awareness on laws among the women. Senior Civil Judge N. Ramalinga Reddy called upon women to stand up for their rights. ICDS project officer Usha Phanikar sought an end to child marriages. UTF district council meeting held

CHITTOOR: The United Teachers Federation's 32nd district council meeting was held here on Sunday to discuss Right to Education Bill 2005 and suggest amendments. Addressing the meeting, UTF State president Krishnamoorthy said that teachers were working with commitment to improve the educational standards. The Central and State Governments were planning to privatise education, which will adversely affect the teachers' community. Correspondent

Plea for BC status to Balijas

KADAPA : Andhra Pradesh Balija Kapu Welfare Association has demanded inclusion of Balija community in backward classes list. Its State general secretary V. Narayanaswamy also demanded a university Vice-Chancellorship, proportionate nominated posts, a Rajya Sabha membership and one MLC to Balijas from each district. Jewellery, cash stolen

MADANAPALLE: Rs. 2 lakhs worth gold jewels and cash were robbed at around noon on Saturday from the house of Sahadeva Naidu at Reddeppa Naidu Colony here. Miscreants broke open the doors of the almirah and decamped with 200 gms of gold and Rs. 65,000 cash. Correspondent

SI in ACB trap

KURNOOL: Bhaskar, sub-inspector at Dornipadu police station in Kurnool district, was trapped by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) personnel at Nandyal on Sunday. According to reports, the SI was allegedly demanding money from a person, identified as Madhusudan Rao, for excluding him from the purview of a murder case at Burrareddypalli. The person invited Bhaskar to collect the money at Nandyal. Staff Reporter

Ryot ends life

ANANTAPUR: A farmer of Victapalli in Parigi mandal of the district Mareppa (45) allegedly committed suicide in his fields on Sunday by holding on to live electricity wires. He was in debts made for agriculture as well as family needs, the police stated. Staff Reporter

Girl drowned

ANANTAPUR: Puli Kondamma (18) of Lachanapalli village in Gooty mandal of the district was drowned in an open well on Sunday, when she went to fetch drinking water. According to the police, she slipped into the water while filling a pot. Staff Reporter

Youth done to death

ANANTAPUR: B. Keshava (20) of Kallur in Garladinne mandal was done to death by unidentified persons outside the village in the wee hours of Sunday.

Police said his head was smashed with a boulder. Reasons for the killing were not known. Staff Reporter

4 paramedical courses get the nod

HYDERABAD : The Government has accorded assent for the NTR Health University's proposals to introduce four paramedical courses, through GO 41issued on February 22, according to an official release.

The courses are M.Sc medical biotechnology, B.Sc speech language pathology of audiology, B.Sc optometry and PG diploma in healthcare management. The courses are of three-year duration with an intake capacity of 30 students in a college, as a twinning programme with Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur. - Special Correspondent

One dies as lorry rams into tollgate

SRIKAKULAM : S. Rama Rao, 40, an employee manning a tollgate at Narasannapeta, died on spot and another person injured when a lorry rammed into it the gate on Sunday. The injured was admitted to the Government hospital here.- Special Correspondent

Dacoits kill temple watchman

KHAMMAM : A gang of dacoits, who struck at Saibaba temple on the outskirts of Wyra town, killed watchman and decamped with hundi offerings in the early hours of Sunday.

Wyra Circle Inspector Balakisan said the watchman, Sitaramulu, 50, was hammered to death. They used the same hammer for breaking open the hundi. The money available in the hundi was over Rs. 1,500 as the collection was cleared by temple authorities a week ago. - Staff Reporter

Aided junior colleges'plea on transfers

HYDERABAD : The Aided Junior Colleges Managements' Association has urged the Government to keep on hold the orders issued by the Intermediate Board Commissioner transferring teaching and non-teaching staff to Government colleges in violation of the GO 2063 and High Court orders.

V. Satyanarayana, general secretary, in a statement on Sunday alleged that the Commissionerate had failed to take any remedial steps despite orders by the Government on February 13 to repatriate the transferred staff to the parent organisations. - Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: The police on Sunday recovered five landmines between Teemulabanda and Kumkumpudi in GK Veedhi mandal in the agency area of the district. - Staff Reporter

Change in norms to pay ex gratia sought

HYDERABAD : The CPI State Council has appealed to the Government to ascertain the hunger deaths and suicide of weavers through the panchayat and mandal set-ups rather than insisting on post-mortem for paying ex gratia to the victims' families.

In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, party secretary K. Narayana said although the families were happy with the Government's decision to pay ex gratia for those who either died of hunger or committed suicide because of poverty, the regulation of getting post-mortem done had dispirited them. - Special Correspondent

Watery grave for four

TIRUPATI : Four women, three of them minors, died when they fell into an irrigation tank at Durgasamudram in Tirupati rural mandal on Sunday.

Nagalakshmamma, 30, was washing clothes at Annaswamy Gandicheruvu when her sister's daughters Lakshmi and Bharati and a neighbourhood girl Revathi were playing nearby. When one of the girls was trying to clean a tiffin box, she fell into the tank and others followed while trying to rescue her. - Staff Reporter
