BANGALORE: India and China, two of the world's oldest civilisations must strive to keep their ties strong and enduring, Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan said here on Sunday.

Speaking at the India-China Friendship Day celebrations after the release of the "India-China People's View " quarterly, Mr. Rajasekharan said: "If India and China join hands, they can change the world, and how the West perceives and deals with Asia."

Both nations are sure to play a major role in ensuring peace and security in the region in the coming years, he predicted, and even the global "Big Brother" the United States had become aware of it, he said. In fact, it was the expectation of most developed nations that India and China should work together, and cooperate in all fields, and proof of this lay in United States President George Bush's recent utterances, the Minister said.

Cooperation

Mr. Rajasekharan said India and China ties were very old, and there was no reason why they should not continue to work together in the pursuit of progress, peace and security. There was much that India could learn from China in economic, social and educational fields, he said.

The former Foreign Secretary A.P. Venkateswaran, Cultural Consul, Embassy of the People's Republic of China, New Delhi, Yang Linhai, president of the India-China Friendship Association Kagodu Thimmappa, and its secretary V. Bhaskaran were present.
