CHENNAI: Several parts of the State experienced heavy rainfall in the last three days. Madurai received 13 cm during the 24-hour-period ending at 8-30 a.m. Saturday. Mettupatti in Madurai district recorded 11 cm and Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district, 9 cm. Coimbatore airport registered 10 cm and Coonoor 8 cm. Pondicherry received 7 cm. Several other places in the State received moderate rainfall. On Saturday evening and Sunday morning, half-a-dozen places recorded rain. Shencottah in Tirunelveli district registered 7 cm followed by Thirumangalam (Madurai) - 4 cm; Thirukattupalli (Thanjavur), Ayakudi (Tirunelveli) and Virudhunagar - 3 cm each and Nanguneri, Madurai airport and Musiri - 2 cm each. The weather office attributed the rain to a combination of factors. The movement of the easterly wind, presence of moisture in the wind and convective activity were the reasons cited. Officials said that rainfall in summer (March to May is considered summer in meteorological parlance) had occurred in the past. Last April, parts of the State experienced rain. But, when convective activity caused rain, interior parts, not coastal areas, invariably benefited, they said.
