A DISTRACTION: A cut-out of a political party on the Madras High Court premises. Photo : M. Vedhan
CHENNAI: A public interest litigation petition seeking to forbear advocates, affiliated to legal wings of various political parties, from indulging in "poster war" on the High Court premises has been filed. In his petition, S. Venkataraman, referring to the large number of posters, cut-outs and banners put up by advocates on February 24 and March 1, said the court should never be utilised for purposes other than those permitted by the Registry. With the Assembly elections round the corner, this trend would intensify. If allowed to continue, the court premises would be used as a political platform. "The presence of huge political placards installed on the premises prejudices and disturbs the legal society practising without any political affiliation, apart from causing unwarranted doubts in the minds of the ... public about the dignity, majesty and neutral status of the court," Mr. Venkataraman said. On the court premises, the seat of the highest body of state judiciary, decorum, the rule of law and impartiality should be preserved. Unless strict rules were introduced and implemented to curb the banner war, bursting of crackers and all such "political exhibitionism," the very functioning of the court would be hampered, he said. He also favoured a ban on dharnas and agitations.
