BELLARY: Tourism and Textiles Minister B. Sriramulu said on Sunday that the media can play a predominant role in development. Mr. Sriramulu was inaugurating Bellary Journalists' Guild at the Raghava Kala Mandira here. The Minister called upon journalists to lay stress on objectivity. This will help people who strive hard to take up more and more pro-people work and serve society. "If the media writes about good work done by anyone, I consider it as an encouragement. At the same time, if the media highlights any mistakes, misuse of funds and so on while implementing various schemes, I take it as a warning and take steps to set right things and ensure that public money is utilised for the purpose it is earmarked," he said. Mr. Sriramulu complimented the guild on its aims and objectives of maintaining the ethics of journalism and to come to the rescue of its members by extending financial assistance at times of difficulty, especially when they or their family members are admitted in hospital. He promised to get a piece of land for a building of the guild. Mayor G. Somashekar Reddy, who presided over the programme, promised to allot housing sites to journalists through the City Municipal Corporation. Raghava Memorial Association president K. Chennappa was the chief guest. Guild president Bhimsen Joshi spoke. Guild general secretary Veerabhadragowda welcomed the gathering. H.M. Mahendranath proposed a vote of thanks.
