Kochi: The Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC-K) leader K. Karunakaran on Sunday predicted a hung Assembly if his party were to be kept away from mainstream coalition politics. The United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) would not win a ruling majority without his party's support, he said. Reacting to the Congress deliberations on its ties with the DIC(K), Mr. Karunakaran told The Hindu that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership was not confident of victory owing to internal squabbles.
Exudes confidence
He was fully convinced about the strength of his party, which was one of the reasons for his statement about a hung Assembly. Mr. Karunakaran did not disclose his mind about the options he was considering, but he did hint broadly that he would wait for another week before deciding the future course of action. Even though he did not state it, Mr. Karunakaran appeared to be playing for more time, besides waiting for the result of the UDF partners' initiatives to bring him into the front, and the Congress's political resolution at the end of the Kochi conference.
