CPI(M) to mobilise tribals in a big way

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The CPI (M) would mobilise tribals from all the nine Agency areas for a `chalo Hyderabad' programme on Thursday to focus their problems that had been neglected by the Government. Party's Polit Bureau member and State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, told reporters on Sunday that the legislature party would meet Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday with the demands. They would await the Government's response and if it were not satisfactory, the future course of agitation would be announced at the rally near the Indira Park.

He said foremost among the demands was an alternative for the Polavaram project. More recently, the Government cheated in the issue by not incorporating in the minutes of the Tribal Advisory Council meeting the contents of a letter submitted by 11 out of 15 MLAs who attended.

The letter demanded constitution of an expert committee to study the demand for exploring alternatives to the project.

The rally would also focus on the displacement of tribals on account of leasing out of lands for bauxite mining by the Jindal group in Visakhapatnam district. The project would affect the coffee plantations which were the source of income for tribals in the area.
