GOOD SHOW: Artistes enacting `Gaya Charithe' at the Garden Public School in Bangalore.
BANGALORE: Yakshagana always rekindles people's interest in our glorious folk tradition. So it was on the premises of the Garden Public School here where the Yakshagana Trust came up with a gripping performance last week. The trust had chosen "Gaya Charithe" to keep the audience in rapt attention. "Gaya Charithe" is an anecdote from the Mahabharatha, narrating how Krishna and Arjuna were forced by circumstances to clash with each other to keep their promises. Gaya, a Gandharva, while travelling by aerial route, defiles the holy offering made by Krishna by spitting from above. An enraged Krishna vows to kill Gaya within eight days. Frightened by the vow, Gaya rushes to Vaikunta, abode of Vishnu, Kailasa, the place of Lord Shiva, and other deities seeking protection. But nobody offers him security. He comes across Narada, who advises him to approach Arjuna, as he is the only one who can protect him. Gaya approaches Arjuna, who, moved by his pitiable condition, offers him protection. Krishna comes to know that Gaya is under the protection of Arjuna. He sends his sister, Subhadra, to talk to her husband, Arjuna. Subhadra meets Arjuna along with their son, Abhimanyu, and pleads with him not to choose confrontation. But Arjuna stands firm by his promise to Gaya. Arpitha Hegde as Abhimanyu displayed dancing abilities. Radhakrishna Urala as Subhadra performed with poise and grace. Subramanya Holla as Arjuna, Udaya M. Hegde as Krishna, Krishnamurthy Tunga as Narada, Vishwanatha Urala as Rukmini, Radhakrishna Holla as Bhima and Rohit as Balarama were impressive. Madhava Manur on "chande" and Bhaskar Bhandari on "maddale" gave able support. Sudharshana Urala was in charge of lighting. The Yakshagana episode was staged in association with the Union Department of Culture
