TIRUPUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest all the 234 seats in the State and try to emerge as an alternative to the DMK and the AIADMK, its national secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu, Bandaru Dattatreya, has said. More opportunities would be given to women, backward classes and weaker sections of society in the elections, he said at a conference of Tirupur Assembly constituency here on Sunday. Asking the electorate not to vote either for the DMK or the AIADMK on May 8, Mr. Dattatreya said that "the people of Tamil Nadu should make both the parties samathi.'' A new chapter will be opened in the State and the drama by both the Dravidian parties should end. Recalling the defeat of Chandrababu Naidu in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly polls despite announcing sops and distributing freebies to the tune of Rs. 5,000 to all sections, the BJP leader said: "Whatever Jayalalithaa gave to the people may not be helpful to her in the elections.'' The DMK leader M. Karunanidhi was trying its best to keep the allies intact. On the other hand, Ms. Jayalalithaa had said her party was open to alliances. "She has won two wickets. The second is the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko,'' he said. Mr. Dattatreya said that the United Progressive Alliance Government had failed on all counts. "The six-year NDA rule was a golden period for the State. The BJP would bring a white paper on it."
