Rainwater collection Sir, First, the term rainwater harvesting is itself erroneous. Harvesting without sowing! Rainwater collection will do. Rainwater itself cannot meet the water requirements as can be appreciated by simple calculation: One inch of rainfall over 100 sq ft can at best collect less than 200 litres contrasted with about 125 litres required per person a day. It cannot help the water table rise without unpaved surfaces around dwellings. At best, it can prevent flooding of roads by containing the downpour within dwellings. This is not to say that government offices, public buildings, educational institutions should not embark on this venture. In fact, these agencies should set an example to the general public. N. Dharmeshwaran, Bangalore Conservation vital Sir, Time has come to adopt innovative methods to save energy as well as water. For instance, solar lighting can be tapped for homes, streetlights and in traffic lights. Energy-efficient devices should be made available cheap so that more households can switch over to these. Rainwater harvesting, where possible, should be adopted. Recycled water can be supplied at least for washing and gardening. D.B.N. Murthy, Bangalore Inconvenience Sir, There is a good park in Hanumanth Nagar which is visited by many local people and tourists. It has a musical fountain. A Nirmala toilet was opened there with much fanfare two years ago. This is now closed, causing hardship to those who visit the park. Some visitors are found using the park as open toilet. The road most affected is 12th Cross called Subramanya Bharati Road. Foul smell emanates all the time and this is likely to spread diseases also. I trust this will receive prompt attention from the authorities concerned.
B.S. Ganesh, Bangalore Traffic congestion Sir, The rush hour traffic under the KR Puram hanging bridge is putting road users to great difficulty. No step has been taken to better the situation. To ease traffic congestion, heavy vehicles should not be allowed to use this road during peak hours. Kumar Mahesh, Bangalore Readers can also email their letters at letters. bangalore@thehindu.co.in
