Students upset over poor hostel conditions

Staff Reporter

Chief Minster H.D. Kumaraswamy promises to look into the matter

BANGALORE: For 1st year MBBS students of the Bangalore Medical College (BMC), getting admitted to one of the country's premier institutions of medical education was a matter of pride. But that apparently disappeared once they stepped into the college's hostel. Fed up of the hostel's "unhygienic" conditions and the severe lack of space, the students finally took up the matter with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy here on Sunday.

"Twenty-five of us have to manage in a small room they call dormitory. Besides, the hostel is not cleaned. It stinks. We want to stay in hygienic conditions," the students told The Hindu, as they awaited the Chief Minister's arrival for a function at the Jnanajyothi auditorium on Central College campus here.

Many of the students had cleared the all-India Pre-Medical Entrance Test with high ranks and got admitted to the college. But the facilities at the hostel had disappointed them. "Even if the interns clear out, the space at the hostel will not be adequate for us. The authorities should take some emergency steps. They should at least appoint some people to clean the place regularly," said a student.

The students had complained to the hostel warden and the college principal. But the conditions remained the same. "During the BMC's jubilee celebrations, the previous Chief Minister had announced some funds for the development of the hostel. Even our principal had promised that the funds will be sanctioned. But nothing has happened," they said.

After much waiting, the students were finally allowed by the police to meet Mr. Kumaraswamy, who promised them that he would look into the matter. The security personnel's initial reluctance to let them approach the Chief Minister did not go well with the students.
