Kumaraswamy group

to back JD(S) candidate

Bangalore: The MLAs supporting Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy have decided to vote for the candidate selected by the Janata Dal (Secular) led by H.D. Deve Gowda in the March 28 elections to the Rajya Sabha.

The Chief Minister, speaking to presspersons here on Monday, denied that there are two JD(S) groups, one led by him and the other by his father, Mr. Deve Gowda. There is no confusion of any sort in the party about who is heading it at the organisational level, he said.

Asked about the second expansion of his Ministry, the Chief Minister said it is not of immediate importance.

Officials to be told to curb female foeticide

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said he will instruct officials of the departments of Law, Police and Health and Family Welfare to take measures to curb sex determination tests and prevent female foeticide.

Releasing a book on the subject authored by K.G. Nagalakshmi Bai, he referred to the reluctance of the officials to take action even though they are armed with the law. — Staff Reporter

Lankesh award

for Bengali film

Bangalore: The controversial Bengali film, "Herbert," by Suman Mukhopadhyay has bagged this year's Lankesh Chitra Prashasti, said filmmaker Kavita Lankesh on Monday. Twelve debut directors sent in their films for the award, she said at a press conference here. The films were viewed by a four-member jury comprising film director P. Sheshadri, N. Pushpamala, film journalist Subramanya and cinematographer Deepu.

The film is based on a novel of the same name written by Nabarum Bhattacharya.

The award will be presented on March 8 at an event organised to mark writer P. Lankesh's 71st birth anniversary. — Staff Reporter

Be patient on demands, government staff told

SHIMOGA: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has said that the demands of government employees will be considered only after the budget session is over. Replying to felicitations by the Shimoga District State Government Employees Association here on Sunday, he said the State's financial position makes it difficult for the Government to consider the demands of the employees right now.

Nearly 75 per cent of the Government's revenue is earmarked for the salary of employees and 10 per cent for the repayment of the loan. Hardly 15 per cent is left for development works, he added. — Special Correspondent

No delay in land acquisition: official

Bidar: There has been no delay in land acquisition for the air-to-ground range of the Indian Air Force, which is to be located at Nirna in Humnabad taluk, Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil said here on Monday.

The Air Force is supposed to deposit half the cost of land acquisition with the district land acquisition officer. The day they do this, the preliminary land acquisition notice will be issued, Mr. Moudgil said. He was reacting to reports in a section of the media about the State Government delaying the setting up of the range.

Konkani academy mourns A.V. Rego

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Mangalore, has mourned the death of Anthony Victor Rego, popularly known as A.V. Rego. Mr. Rego, 68, passed away after a brief illness, at a private hospital in Bangalore on Sunday. Mr. Rego, who was an entrepreneur and a former member of the academy, championed the cause of Konkani, a press release by the academy here says.

The academy has organised a condolence meeting in his memory on its premises here on Tuesday at 10.30 a.m., according to the release.

Academy president Eric Ozario, the former president Alexander F. D'Souza and members of the academy have mourned the death of Mr. Rego. — Staff Reporter
