CUDDALORE: As many as 9.73 lakh Electors' Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) have so far been issued in Cuddalore district. It constitutes about 65 per cent of the 15.10 lakh electorate in the nine Assembly constituencies. Steps have been taken to cover the remaining voters too, according to Gagandeep Singh Bedi, District Collector. The Collector inspected the on-going process of addition and deletion from electoral rolls and distribution of EPICs at two centres in Vriddhachalam taluk. He told presspersons that as per the direction of the Election Commission, the cards were being issued on the spot through online system. After the relevant forms were submitted to the officials, the videography was taken at the designated places and the cards were being handed over to voters immediately. In the recent phase carried out from February 28 to March 3, a total of 25,505 EPICs were issued in Nellikuppam (8,394), Chidambaram (9,721) and Vriddchalam (7,390) constituencies. The highest number of EPICs has been issued in the taluk of Mangalore where 1,33,489 of the 1,89,554 voters received the EPICs. In Chidambaram, only 91,414 of the 1,38,945 voters got the EPICs. The details of the EPICs distribution are as follows with the total electorate within brackets: Mangalore - 1,33,480 (1,89,554); Vriddhachalam - 1,25,554 (1,90,358); Panruti - 1,15,179 (1,70,842); Cuddalore - 1,08,083 (1,86,213); Nellikuppam - 1,07,367 (1,61,285); Bhuvanagiri - 1,03,730 (1,61,420); Kattumannarkoil - 95,679 (1,49,085); Kurinjipadi - 92,414 (1,62,416) and Chidambaram - 91,414 (1,38,954).
Bridge work
Later, Mr. Bedi inspected the progress of works on the construction of the high-rise bridge across the Manimuktha at Vriddhachalam at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore. Mr Bedi also inspected construction of a stadium on a seven-acre site adjoining the government college at Vriddhachalam. The Rs. 30-lakh stadium would have a football ground, a volleyball court, and a 400-metre track. The galleries would be in place by month-end, he said.
