BJP slams UPA for disrupting Parliament

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday criticised the United Progressive Alliance constituents for disrupting Parliamentary proceedings vis-à-vis the Banerjee Committee report on burning coaches of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra in Gujarat in 2002.

The BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha, V. K. Malhotra charged that the leak of the report just before Assembly polls in five States was a UPA bid to "garner minority votes." "A similar move to leak the interim report of the Banerjee Committee ahead of the Bihar polls backfired on the Congress and its allies. They lost in Bihar and local body elections in Gujarat as well," Mr. Malhotra said.

Stating that the Nanavati Commission report was yet to be tabled, the BJP said the Banerjee Committee's findings were "not the last word" on the subject.

The UPA had earlier lambasted the BJP for wasting time and money by disrupting Parliamentary proceedings. "The Congress then told the BJP that Parliament is for enlightened debate and civilised discussion. Now, the ruling party itself is disrupting proceedings, moving into the well of the House and shouting slogans. This is unprecedented," Mr. Malhotra claimed.
