U.P. Congress leader's

wife in critical condition

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Luv Bhargav's wife Mehar, who was shot at by some young men in Lucknow last week, is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital here.

According to hospital sources, her condition is "very critical" with the bullet having injured her spinal cord. "She is being treated for gunshot injuries and is on ventilator."

The incident took place in Lucknow on February 28 when Mehar and her daughter were coming out of their house. Four boys walking down the lane passed lewd remarks at them. When confronted, they fired at the duo injuring Mehar.

IGNOU admission

date extended

NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University has extended the last date for admission to its one-year certificate programme in Competency Enhancement of Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and Female Health Worker (FHW) till March 15.

According to an IGNOU release, the programme aims at improving knowledge and skills of ANM and FHW in reproductive and child health, socio-cultural and communication areas. The minimum duration of the course is one year and it can be completed in a maximum period of three years.

The detailed student handbook and prospectus-cum-admission form can be obtained from the Regional Centres of IGNOU in the respective State Capitals or Information Centre of IGNOU here on payment of Rs.50 in cash.

Anglo-Indian team meets Minister

NEW DELHI: A delegation of Anglo-Indians from across the country called on Minority Affairs Minister A.R. Antulay here this past week.

The delegation, comprising MPs Francis Fanthome and Ingrid Mcleod, MLAs from eight States and Anglo-Indian Association representatives, presented a memorandum to Mr. Antulay and urged him to create an Anglo-Indian Cell/Desk in his Ministry to handle issues pertaining to their community.

Expressing happiness that Anglo-Indians were the first group from the minorities to meet him, Mr. Antulay said a cell for them would soon be started in his Ministry.

IINS workshop

NEW DELHI: The International Institute for Non-Aligned Studies (IINS), an international NGO, is holding a one-day workshop on "Globalisation and Poverty Eradication-the Imperatives of Education, Social and Gender Equality, Transparency and Accountability" here this Thursday.

Prominent speakers at the workshop will include writer-activist Samina Ibrahim from Pakistan and International Institute for Peace Secretary-General Peter Stania.
