Issue of voter ID cards picks up in Tambaram

CHENNAI: Issue of electoral photo identity cards (EPIC) in the Tambaram taluk, which began on Sunday for the Tambaram Assembly constituency, picked up pace on Monday. Officials said it would continue till Thursday in all the five distribution centres.

They said they have started the exercise with a target to reach out those whose names were left out. However, the officials are hoping to wind up the exercise before March 31.

At least in five centres people have turned up in large numbers.

Many teenagers, who turned 18 recently and were left out, were seen in all the centres.

According officials two centres each in Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur and one in Mudichur are working to meet the demand.

The crowd that gathered at St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union Primary School in Perungalathur, found little official assistance. This led to chaotic scenes for sometime in the morning, but settled thereafter. Revenue officials including the tahsildar, T. Ramamoorthi supervised the arrangement.
