To protest withdrawal of appointment on compassionate grounds

CHENNAI:
Bank employees throughout the country will go on a token strike on March 9, protesting the withdrawal of appointment on compassionate grounds in banks and demanding a second option for employees for pension.
All-India Bank Officers' Federation general secretary Shantha Raju told newspersons here on Saturday that the appointment on compassionate grounds was introduced to help out the families of those who died in harness. Nevertheless, such appointments were denied even to the families of employees who had lost their lives while defending the property of banks. Though the United Forum of Banking Unions suggested various alternatives during its discussions with the Indian Banks Association, they were not considered, he said.
As for pension, Mr. Raju said, the federation sought a meeting with the IBA to begin talks on the alternatives as per the understanding reached in the last wage settlement. But the IBA's response was disappointing. Mr. Raju said State Bank of India employees would go on an indefinite strike from April 3 to demand revision of the pension ceiling.
