Scooter mechanic commits suicide

NEW DELHI: Having lost his sole source of income, a 28-year-old man allegedly hanged himself to death at Tilak Nagar in West Delhi on Sunday night. The police recovered a suicide note from his possession in which he stated that he was taking the extreme step as his scooter-repair shop had been closed in the wake of a court directive regarding removal of encroachments.

According to the police, Shambhu Nath was found hanging from ceiling of timber shop where he lived. He earlier used to repair scooters by the roadside. But, the civic body removed his shop recently following court orders to initiate a drive against encroachments.

The police said Shambhu Nath belonged to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh.

Drug trafficking

racket busted

NEW DELHI: Police on Monday claimed to have busted a drug trafficking racket with the arrest of three people from West Delhi.

Mohammad Firo (22), Omkar (35) and Rajiv Kumar (23) were arrested after a raid in West Delhi's Naraina area.

Police recovered 41.5 kg of `ganja' from them.

Chargesheet filed in blast case

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Monday chargesheeted main accused Tariq Ahmed Dar in the Govindpuri bomb blast case, one among the series of blasts on Diwali eve in the Capital last year.

The chargesheet, naming Dar and Mohammed Rafiq Shah as accused, was filed in a Delhi court late on Monday evening, Joint Commissioner (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said.

Jail for telecom officer

NEW DELHI: Acceptance of a mere Rs 100 as bribe by a junior telecom officer seven years ago cost him a year's rigorous imprisonment on Monday.

Special Judge Sunil Gaur found accused Niranjan Singh guilty under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and also slapped a fine of Rs 4,000 on him.

According to a complaint lodged by Patel Nagar resident Ashok Puri on May 10, 1999, the accused, stationed at Rajindra Bhawan Exchange, demanded Rs 400 as ``fee'' for activating a newly-installed telephone connection at the complainant's residence.

Puri lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Branch, which laid a trap for the accused and caught him red-handed accepting Rs 100 from the complainant.

High capacity buses

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court was informed on Monday that the tender process for acquiring high capacity buses for Delhi would be completed within eight weeks.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, Mr Justice C.K. Thakker and Mr. Justice R.V. Raveendran also accepted the recommendations of the Environment Prevention and Control Authority (EPCA) for Delhi headed by Mr. Bhure Lal.
