Thiruvananthapuram: The handling of parcel traffic in Thiruvananthapuram railway division has come down drastically following the Commercial Taxes Department's crackdown on parcels being transported through railways for non-payment of sales tax. A senior railway official said the parcel traffic handling, which ranged between 30,000 and 35,000 a day has now come down to 26,000 to 27,000 a day. This has affected the revenue of the Railways. It has been pointed out that the department has taken over 978 parcels from major parcel offices of the Railways in the last two months and 548 parcels are yet to be returned. The official said the railway authorities were extending full cooperation in effecting seizure of parcels for which the sales tax has not been paid. As per rules, the department has to execute an Indemnity Bond and give a receipt to the Railways as they are the carriers of the parcels. The Railways are insisting on the procedure, as they will have to pay compensation to the parties concerned for the loss of parcels. The official added that the department was free to inspect the parcels transported through the Railways. Instead of taking away the parcels for which the sales tax had not been paid, they should inform the defaulters and give sufficient time before taking further action.
