Demand constitution of committees at work places to prevent sexual harassment



FIGHTING HARASSMENT: Members of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane (JMS) staging a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Gulbarga on Tuesday demanding constitution of committees at all workplaces to keep a check on complaints abou t sexual harassment.

GULBARGA: Members of the All India Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane and the Pragnya Kanoonu Salaha Samiti on Tuesday took out a procession in the city as part of the International Women's Day being observed on March 8. They staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding constitution of committees at all work places to prevent sexual harassment of women.

Sanghatane State president K. Neela and samiti president Meenakshi Bali, who led the procession from the Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk to the Deputy Commissioner's office, in their memorandum submitted to the Revenue Department officials, said that although the Supreme Court has stated that the committees should be formed at all work places to look into complaints of sexual harassment, the directive has not been implemented in most work places.

The memorandum urged the district administration to initiate action in this regard and ask the officials concerned to take measures to constitute the committees immediately to prevent sexual harassment of women at work places. They went in a procession to the office of the North-Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC).

They submitted a memorandum to NEKRTC authorities demanding that the authorities ensure that men do not occupy the seats reserved for women in buses.
