CNN-IBN demands probe into attack
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
Editor-in-Chief of CNN-IBN Rajdeep Sardesai on Tuesday demanded a judicial probe into the attack on the channel's staff in Lucknow earlier in the day.
The attack took place within 24 hours of the news channel airing a story on Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati's assets, which are under a Central Bureau of Investigation probe, he said in a statement without "blaming anyone."
Mr. Sardesai said four persons surrounded the CNN-IBN vehicle, dragged the driver and the attendant out, and beat them up.
The vehicle was also set afire.
Expressing concern over the violence, Mr. Sardesai said: "In the best traditions of press freedom, journalists must be allowed to perform their professional duties free from violence and intimidation. Today, it is CNN-IBN; tomorrow, it could be another channel or newspaper. Media freedom is at stake, and the media needs to stand together as one."
