Road safety week celebrations are organised every year, especially by the police, stressing the need to follow traffic rules strictly. But, drivers of heavy vehicles show scant respect for these rules and never bother about the safety of other road-users. In Palayamkottai, drivers of both government and private buses stop their vehicles to take and drop passengers wherever they want. Though the Palayamkottai bus-stand is just 50 metres away from the Thevar Building, a group of passengers always board their buses only at this unscheduled stop. And the bus drivers invariably halt their vehicles on the middle of the road near this building to take the passengers, causing serious traffic snarls right from morning to evening and even accidents. Despite repeated complaints from other road-users, particularly, two-wheeler riders, the newly deployed women police constables refuse to act against the erring bus drivers. Now, a group of young advocates from Palayamkottai is all set to file a public interest litigation in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court against the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime), Tirunelveli City to curb traffic violations and streamlining of vehicular movement in the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai.
