KOZHIKODE: A mass dharna was held here on Tuesday against the closure of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), a Central Government enterprise in Kozhikode. The organisers of the dharna demanded the continued functioning of the institute. It was conducted under the aegis of the Save CIFT committee. CITU general secretary Elamarem Kareem inaugurated the dharna. Corporation councillor K.V.Baburaj, C.P.Sulaiman, K.Damodaran, among others spoke on the occasion. The CIFT was set up in Kozhikode in 1962 under the Union Ministry of Agriculture, and is the only fisheries research organisation for the entire Malabar area. The activities of the CIFT had benefited the fishing community in the region, the Save CIFT committee highlighted. The move by the Centre to close down the enterprise was also a discrimination against Kerala, it was pointed out.
