Nritya academy launches work on biographies

The publications will cover award winners from 1978 to 2004

HUBLI: The Karnataka Sangeet Nritya Academy has begun work on publishing a book containing the biographies of Sangeet Nritya Academy award winners from 1978 to 2004.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Rajshekhar Mansur, president of the academy, said the academy will also bring out a book on the achievements of the various presidents of the academy till date.

The publications are part of the "Suvarna Karnataka" celebrations, he said.

Prof. Mansur said the academy will bring out biographies of musicians of Carnatic style in two volumes.

Regarding the differences among the members of the Sugam Sangeet Parishat, Prof. Mansur declined comment.

To a query, he said artistes should eschew egoism. "A true artist will completely dedicate himself to the art form and there will not be an iota of ego left in him," he said.

Elaborating on the various programmes that the academy has conducted so far, Prof. Mansur said a two-day dance and music programme will be conducted in Raichur and Bellary shortly.

He said the academy has completed work on the development of the archive section. Video clippings of six artistes have been converted into compact disc form.

Felicitation

He said on behalf of the academy, the 94th birthday of Gangubai Hangal will be celebrated on Wednesday at Sawai Gandharva Hall in Hubli. Ms. Hangal will be felicitated.

A seminar on the life and contribution of Ms. Hangal to the field and a music programme by her disciples will be organised, he said.

Balawantrao Patil, registrar of the academy, was present.
