PONDICHERRY: With lack of railway service to reach Karaikal, tourists and the devotees of the famous shrine of Lord Saneeswarar have the only alternative of going by road. But the poor roads leading to Karaikal on the Nagapattinam, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai and Sirkali routes from neighbouring districts in Tamil Nadu had been hampering the flow of devotees and also cause inconvenience, said the Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss in a release here on Saturday. Calling upon the Union Road Transport Ministry to initiate immediate steps to repair the roads to ensure uninterrupted and easy flow of tourists to Karaikal district, Mr Ramadoss said that this was an important infrastructural necessity and the roads should also be widened so that Karaikal would become easily accessible from neighbouring Tamilnadu pockets.
Ferry service
Mr. Ramadoss also suggested to the Government to study the feasibility of introducing ferry service from Chennai to Velankanni via Pondicherry, Karaikal and Nagapattinam so that the people could have an alternative and new transport facility. Flow of tourists would also increase fast through this measure, he asserted.
