PONDICHERRY: General secretary of Pondicherry based Dravida Peravai, N. Nandhivarman and the vice president of the national council of Samata party Mr. Kumari Nambi welcomed the verdict of the Supreme Court in Mullaperiyar dam issue permitting Tamil Nadu to raise the water level of the dam. Addressing newsmen here on Tuesday Nandhivarman said that there had been attempts on the part of several governments in the past to raise the water level in the dam. The present verdict was a major relief and hence the verdict was welcome, he said. Both Mr. Nandhivarman and Mr. Kumari Nambi however felt anguished over the move of Kerala Government "to avoid implementation of the court directive". Hence the Centre should intervene in the matter and ensure that the court order was implemented in letter and spirit. Mr. Nandhivarman said that already the Karnataka Government had been violating the court directive in implementing order in Cauvery water issue. A practice had come to prevail on the part of the State Governments by and large to take a stand different stand from what they must do once the Court orders. It was therefore the duty of the Centre to intervene and ensure speedy enforcement of the court directive, as that alone would make there was strict adherence to the spirit of constitution. Mr. Nandhivarman also said that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had adopted a vindictive approach against the MDMK leader Vaiko when she imprisoned him and P. Nedumaran and others on baseless charges under POTA for 19 long months. Now it was amusing that Vaiko had joined hands with the AIADMK. If she took the stand that there was no permanent enemies or friends in politics, she, along with Vaiko and the DPI leader Tol. Tirumavalavan, should urge the Centre to lift the ban on LTTE. Dravida Peravai would be a coordinator in the proposed third front being formed in collaboration with the Samata party and a few other like-minded parties, Nandhivarman said. Organising Secretary of Dravida Peravai Syed Khader was also present.
