Nellore Corporation to go high-tech

Online tax collection system, 24-hour power supply in select areas to be introduced soon

    NELLORE: The Municipal Corporation of Nellore is planning to introduce online tax collection system and 24-hour water supply in select areas in a few months.

    The online tax collection system will be on the lines of the system in vogue in the Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam. "It is aimed at making the tax collection mechanism more transparent besides facilitating the payment mode much easier for thousands of property assesses of the corporation," Mayor P. Sailaja Reddy told reporters on Tuesday.

    She said the corporators, the Deputy Mayor and herself had gone to Vizag to study the online tax collection system, 24-hour water supply and a few other civic services. She said the corporation would also include various other services such as issuance of birth and death certificates, house plans and others in a phased manner under the online system. Officials had already begun updating all records, she said.

    When asked about funds to take up the project, corporator A Jayakumar Reddy claimed that both the State Government as well as the Department for International Development (DFID) would lend financial assistance to the project. The corporation would soon rope in a company to devise the software for the project.

    Besides, the corporation might introduce 24-hour water supply in select areas of Nellore on a pilot bases for those families who have municipal taps under the paid connection category. This means, the scheme would not be introduced at public taps due to financial constraints.

    Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor M Venkateswarlu demanded that officials explain reasons for the delay in constituting ward committees. "Despite the government's order, which was issued on December 5, 2005, the officials have not yet taken steps till date," he alleged.
