Women gram panchayat members' meet

BANGALORE: More than 3,000 women gram panchayat members will meet on Women's Day (Wednesday) to discuss formation of a State-level federation.

These women from all over the State will prepare an agenda to help improve women's representation in politics and find ways to tackle corruption. There are 40,000 elected women representatives in the 5,653 gram panchayats in the State.

"Until you get into the system, you do not realise the amount of corruption in it. From building a road to implementing a project, there is a lot of corruption," said Shilpa, a gram panchayat member of Kolar taluk, at a press conference here on Tuesday. The women are being brought together by the Hunger Project. — Staff Reporter

British Airways offers special services

Bangalore: British Airways has announced special services for passengers from five Indian airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. The services being offered include a team of facilitators to greet and assist its First, Club World and Executive Club customers through the airport. The team will also escort passengers to the baggage screening area.

It has also introduced a "Fast Bag Drop" counter that allows customers who have checked in online to quickly drop their bags and proceed for security check rather than join long queues at check-in counters. — Special Correspondent

Damage in Aurad taluk put at Rs. 2 crores

Bidar: The damage caused by last week's heavy rain and hailstorm in Aurad taluk is close to Rs. 2 crores, according to preliminary estimates of the Government.

A report compiled by the district administration says 15 villages suffered damage. Agricultural crops on 1,920 hectares and horticultural crops on 80 hectares were destroyed. Seventeen cattle and 87 sheep and chicken died. Over 700 houses were partially damaged and 28 totally damaged, the report says.

A survey is on and compensation will be paid in a week, Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil said. — Staff Correspondent

Workshop on Ambedkar's writings

Udupi: Mangalore University Vice Chancellor K.M. Kaveriappa has said the thoughts and ideals of B.R. Ambedkar are relevant for all times. He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on the "Writings and speeches of B.R. Ambedkar" organised by Mangalore University here.

Prof. Kaveriappa said Ambedkar felt that higher education would not achieve its purpose until it reached the weaker sections and wanted social justice and economic development to go together.

Ambedkar Study Centre Director Vishwanath welcomed the gathering. Government First Grade College Principal Jagadish Rao proposed a vote of thanks. — Staff Correspondent
