Corrections and clarifications

Getting right one of the engagements of the Karnataka Chief Minister — in Bangalore — was probably a task in "Civil servants facing new challenges: Kumaraswamy" (March 5, 2006, page 6). On March 4, he inaugurated not the conference of the UPSC and the KPSC as we said, but the ninth national conference of Chairpersons of State Public Service Commissions.

"Kins" and "the forceful closure of shops", asks a reader from the north, in a UNI/PTI report "Lucknow fast returning to normal" (Delhi edition, March 6, 2006, page 5). The plural of kin is kin, while "forceful", no doubt a measure of strength, cannot overwhelm and replace the much-against-the-will "forcible".

The news item on HPCL's plans to expand its refinery capacity and retail network also stretched the investment figure, by 10 times, in the headline ("HPCL to invest Rs. 12,000 cr.", Business page, March 7, 2006). The investment planned is Rs. 1,200 crore, as mentioned in the report.
