`Congress lets down weavers'

Alliance with Telugu Desam party costs dearly: BJP leader

NALGONDA: Former Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Sayyad Shahnawaz Hussain has alleged that the Congress Government led by Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has failed to come to the rescue of weavers as promised by him as an opposition leader.

Addressing protesters, who staged a dharna at Collectorate here on Tuesday, Mr. Hussain said the Government had done nothing to save them from financial difficulties in the face of mounting costs of yarn and chemicals. "Suicide of weavers and farmers is shame on the Government," he added.

Mr. Hussain alleged that the then Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu had "unfortunately" failed to spend the money allotted by the NDA Government for farmers and weavers.

"We had told the TD Government that money is not at all a problem but the amount was not used properly," he said. He observed that the BJP would have come to power had it not allied with the TD.

BJP State unit president Nallu Indrasena Reddy lashed out at the Government for failing to provide succour for weavers. "Though big industries have been copying the designs designed by the weavers, the Government is not taking any action to stop it," he said.

Party general secretary K. Laxman and district unit president Oruganti Ramulu and others spoke.

Party activists tried to barge into the Collectorate by defying the police security net.

Later a delegation led by top leaders met the Collector and presented to him a memorandum.
