to back AIADMK

SALEM: The Uzhaippali Makkal Munnetra Katchi (UMMK) has decided to back the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance in the Assembly elections.

A press release from its State president P. Govindarajan here on Tuesday said the decision was taken by its office-bearers who also endorsed a decision to form a committee to discuss election-related issues with the AIADMK. — Special Correspondent

Bank employees

defer strike

CHENNAI: The United Forum of Bank Unions, which called for a token strike on March 9 in support of bank employees' various demands, have deferred the strike.

The All India Bank Officers' Confederation general secretary Shantha Raju in a statement here on Tuesday said the decision to defer the strike was taken in view of the reconciliation for further discussion brought by the Chief Labour Commissioner, Delhi, between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and the United forum of Bank Unions. — Special Correspondent

Programme on

US visa regulations

CHENNAI: A programme to disseminate information on latest rules and regulations pertaining to obtaining the US visa, particularly for business travellers, will be organised here on Friday by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

T. Katharine Van Til, vice-consul at the American Consulate, will address the meeting on `US visa update and Business Executive Programme (BEP) advantage,' a chamber release said.

The BEP is a special programme of the Consulate to facilitate and speed up the US visa application process for applicants from established companies that send a large number of employees to the US.

The chamber had recently joined the BEP programme, a move that was expected to immensely benefit its members, particularly the small and medium enterprises.

Awards for SSIs

CHENNAI: The Small Industries Service Institute has invited entries for the 2005 national awards in various categories for small scale industries.

A press release from the Institute said the awards were instituted by the Centre in 1983 and given to outstanding small scale entrepreneurs; quality products in the small scale sector and for research and development efforts in SSIs.

The Centre had decided to give three national awards (first, second and third) and one special recognition award for entrepreneurs belonging to each applicant State/Union Territory.

Two special prizes for outstanding women and SC/ST entrepreneurs would also be presented.

Details, applications and procedure for submitting applications could be obtained by post or in person from the Director of the Small Industries Service Institute at 65/1, Guindy. In districts, the details could be obtained from the General Manager, District Industries Centre.

The last date for receipt of filled-in applications is March 31. — Staff Reporter

Foreign students help out in relief work

NAGAPATTINAM: Nearly 100 college students, including 30 girls from Japan, North America and Europe belonging to International Volunteer University Students Association, are helping in the construction of permanent houses for tsunami victims by the Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt here.

The Mutt is constructing houses at Akkaraipettai, Nagore Pandagasalai and Mela Pattinacherry in the coastal areas of the district. — Staff Reporter
