Chief Minister

greets women

HYDERABAD : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday greeted women on the eve of International Women's Day.

In a message, he recalled the commendations by World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz and US President George Bush for the dynamic entrepreneurship of women self-help groups.

Dr. Reddy reiterated that the Government was committed to overall development of women.

He hoped that women would forge ahead with perseverance and emerge as role models. - Special Correspondent

Suspected Maoist

killed in encounter

GUNTUR : A suspected Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalite was killed when he tried to escape on a motorcycle along with two of his accomplices while the police personnel were checking vehicles near Bollapalli police station in Guntur district in the wee hours of Tuesday.The dead was identified as B. Srinivas Rao from Karempudi. - Staff Reporter

Cash stolen

Sangareddy: Amount withdrawn to pay leave encashment of Transco employees was stolen from the motorcycle of senior assistant Govinda Rao here on Tuesday.

Mr. Govinda Rao, who withdrew Rs 1.78 lakh from the bank, kept it in his motorcycle box. Just before reaching the office he parked the vehicle to pick up the list of employees at ADE office. After returning, he found the box open and cash missing from it.

Goods train derails

VIJAYAWADA: Eight bogies of a goods train derailed between Krishna Canal station and Peda Vadlapudi in Guntur district on Tuesday. The railway officials cancelled three passenger trains to Ongole, Guntur and Tenali and diverted all express trains via Reddipalem station due to the derailment. The track between Krishna Canal and Peda Vadlapudi stations will be restored by Wednesday. - Staff Reporter

Special probe team

arrives in Medak

Sangareddy : A five-member police special investigation team from New Delhi studying the technical side of the Maoist activity in the State arrived in Medak on Tuesday.

The team is said to have completed their visit to Guntur and Prakasam districts where the Maoists have tried the remote detonation technique using frequency as a tool to trigger the blast. They came here to study the huge catch of electronic equipment seized from one Anji Reddy.

Rajya Sabha member

KADAPA : The Rajampet police have registered a case against Rajya Sabha member C. Ramachandraiah and 24 Telugu Desam Party activists on the charge of obstructing the police from discharging their duties and using derogatory language against Additional SP M. Lakshmi Reddy.

Mr. Ramachandraiah and TDP members, who protested at Mannur and Rajampet alleging negligence of officials and the police leading to the school building crash, had heated exchanges with the Additional SP and other police officials. - Staff Reporter

ADILABAD : Extensive damage to the standing crop in Nirmal division was caused by hailstorm and rainfall accompanied by gales on Sunday night. - Staff Reporter

Suicide attempt on

court premises

KURNOOL : A convict in a dowry harassment case attempted suicide on the premises of fifth Additional Sessions Court at Nandyal on Tuesday after the court upheld the punishment imposed by the lower court. Venkata Swamy Rao, his father and mother were convicted to one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1,000 in a dowry harassment case. - Staff Reporter
