Suspension issue echoes in Parliament

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: An echo of the controversy over the suspension of 62 Opposition members from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Monday was heard in Parliament on Tuesday with Telugu Desam Party members forcing two adjournments of the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha.

Though efforts by TDP leader K. Yerrannaidu to raise the issue before question hour in the Lok Sabha came to naught, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the House for 15 minutes during zero hour following a war of words between TDP and Congress members.

As Mr. Yerrannaidu accused the Andhra Pradesh Government of ``murdering democracy'' and sought to highlight what happened in the State Assembly on Monday amid a roar of protest from Congress members, Mr. Chatterjee pointed out that events which took place in a State legislature could not be raised in the Lok Sabha. With both sides unwilling to relent, he adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

Projects' row

The Rajya House was adjourned twice as agitated TDP members demanded a CBI inquiry into alleged corruption in irrigation projects. Simultaneously, BJP and Congress members also moved to the well on the Godhra issue. Sensing the mood, Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat adjourned the House till 11.30 a.m. When the House re-assembled, similar scenes prevailed and Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan adjourned it till noon.

Angry TDP members were in no mood to relent even when the House re-assembled. The Deputy Chairman said: "What happens in Andhra Pradesh Assembly is not the question here. Whole question hour was disrupted because of this.'' At this point, TDP members staged a noisy walkout.
