Plantation workers unhappy with pay revision

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The Kerala Plantation Workers Federation, the labour union affiliated to the AITUC, has alleged that the recently announced pay revision in the sector signalled the capitulation of the Government to the pressure tactics of the plantation management lobby and is a negation of all what it had propounded during the talks with the labour unions.

The federation will take the lead in organising a joint agitation to get the anomalies in the order rectified and ensure that the revision will be implemented with retrospective effect from April 1, 2002, the closing date of the earlier agreement, the federations leaders said.

In a release issued after the meeting of the federation here, president C.A. Kurian and others said that the Government was forced to agree to a pay revision following agitation by the plantation labour on more than one occasions.

The trade union had submitted their views on the draft report announced by the Government on June 22, 2005. However, the authorities had failed to make any note of these suggestions made by the trade unions, they said.

The recommendations of the minimum wages advisory committee were also rejected by the Government in the final report, they alleged.

The committee had agreed to the suggestion by the AITUC that the DA rate be hiked to 7 paise in the rubber plantation sector.

However, in the final report, this had been rejected.

The new declaration would increase the workload of labourers in the tea plantation sector.
