Panel to reconsider site for Telangana varsity

Staff Reporter

Congress, TRS legislators against the university coming up at Sarangapur

  • MLAs allege that the earmarked land is rocky
  • Allege that the site is not convenient to students from Karimnagar, Medak and Adilabad
  • Legislators in favour of university near Dichpally
  • Four sites identified between Kamareddy and Dichapally

NIZAMABAD: The high power committee for selection of site to establish the new university for Telangana is understood to be visiting the district again on March 8.

The committee comprising K. C. Reddy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Higher Education Commission, Suleman Siddiqui, Osmania University Vice-Chancellor, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, and a couple of senior IAS officers is visiting the district in the wake of controversy triggered following objections raised by some MLAs regarding the land earmarked for the university at Sarangapur, on the outskirts of the district headquarters.

It may be recalled that at a meeting held in the first week of last month here, Dichpally MLA G. Ganga Reddy (TRS) and Banswada MLA Bajireddy Govardhan (Congress) strongly argued that the proposed site at Sarangapur was not suitable for the university as it was a rocky terrain and not convenient to students from Karimnagar, Medak and Adilabad.

The duo had contended that there was a lot of land around Dichpally area nearby the Nagpur -Hyderabad National Highway and if the varsity comes up there it would be more convenient to the entire North Telangana. The two legislators also alleged before the high power committee meeting that the land selection at Sarangapur was done at the behest of a Minister.

They complained that they were neither consulted nor involved in process.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the district administration, in order to avoid criticism that it was baised, has identified four sites between Kamareddy and Dichpally to be show to the high power panel.
