CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Governor and Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, on Tuesday advocated the need for establishing a more responsive system for enhancing the dignity, honour and respect for women in different spheres of activity. "We must work collectively for their emancipation and empowerment by making them equal partners in our socio-economic development programmes," the General said in a message on the eve of International Women's Day. He further said that women performed a multi-dimensional role in society and an action-oriented approach was necessary at all levels for improving their lot. It was a matter of serious concern and introspection that women received only one-tenth of the world's income and less than one hundredth of the world's total property. All the development parameters like health, education, employment, social security and governance indicated an abysmally low status and an average participation in most fields. It was imperative to be more responsive to the issues concerning women and to tackle the problems faced by them on a priority basis.
