CHENNAI: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) on Tuesday urged authorities to withdraw the `deemed university' status to educational institutions to maintain uniformity and excellence in the higher education sector.

"We submitted a memorandum to the regional director of the All-India Council for Technical Education, asking him to withdraw the status to maintain the democratic nature in educational institutions," G. Selva, SFI general secretary said.

In the memorandum, the students' body also urged the authorities to hold a judicial enquiry into the recent clashes between the management and students of the SRM Deemed University and look into the unauthorised occupation of private and `poramboke' lands by deemed universities.
