SAFE ZONE: Police personnel taking out a motorcyle rally on Tuesday in Guntur
GUNTUR: A motorcycle rally aimed at educating the public on the need to use helmets while driving two-wheelers and fastening seat belts while driving cars was conducted by the Guntur city traffic police on Tuesday. The rally was flagged off by Deputy Transport Commissioner G. Mamata Prasad from the RTC bus station. The State Government had made use of helmets and fastening of seat belts compulsory following a directive from the High Court, she said. "Police will conduct surprise checks soon and penalise those riding without helmets," she said. Traffic policemen wearing fluorescent jackets, helmets and driving new motorcycles led the rally on Guntur streets. The pillion-riders carried banners stressing the importance of safe driving. Staff from the Transport and police departments distributed pamphlets to the passers-by on the compulsory helmet rule, which would come into force from March 9.
