CHENNAI: Private telecom service provider Airtel recently announced that calls made by its mobile subscribers in Chennai and Tamil Nadu to landlines across the State would be charged at local call rates. "There is no more STD charge for any call, mobile or landline, anywhere within Tamil Nadu. All outgoing calls will be at local rates," a company press release said. Airtel also announced the launch of a suite of Re.1 plans. Under the "India Home" plan for its postpaid subscribers, at Rs.299 a month, Airtel to Airtel local calls would be charged at Re.1 for two minutes, while the tariff for all other calls across the country would be of Re.1 a minute. Text messages would be charged at Re.1 each. For the prepaid subscribers, it had introduced Rs.899 recharge plan in which all local calls, national long distance calls would be charged at Re.1 a minute. The SMS would be charged at Re.1 each. The company announced the launch of the "Airtel all for one" plan under which the fixed line subscribers could call anywhere in the country at the rate of Re.1 a minute. The plan was available at a monthly rental of Rs.299 and it also offered a special tariff of Re.1 for three minutes for Airtel fixed line to Airtel fixed line local calls.
