MANGALORE: Erosion of the coast has different dynamics in different parts of the world. Erosion is a part of the intricate relationship between the elements of nature and should not be mistaken for a natural disaster, said international scholar on coastal erosion Ryuichiro Nishi of Kagoshima University in Japan. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a workshop on "Coastal erosion control measures for west coast region of India" at the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka, Surathkal, on Tuesday, Mr. Nishi said the transportation of sand from one place to another is a natural phenomenon and only in a few situations does the need arise for artificial "nourishment" of beaches. In India, erosion in the west coast is uniform and more intensive, while the east coast is prone to site-intensive erosion and there is no uniformity , he added. When asked why many beaches have widened on the east coast after the tsunami, Mr. Nishi said tsunamis expose vast expanses of the beach either uniformly or in isolated pockets.
