Lalu statement on Banerjee report today
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Government on Tuesday postponed its statement in the Rajya Sabha on the U.C. Banerjee Commission report on the Godhra train fire. An announcement to this effect was made by Deputy Chairman K. Rehman Khan.
According to Mr. Khan, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad informed the Chair that he would make the statement on Wednesday. On Monday, after proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were disrupted, Mr. Prasad told the Rajya Sabha that a statement would be made at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. It was also listed in the "Revised List of Business" for the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Earlier, Basudeb Acharia (Communist Party of India-Marxist) tried to raise the issue in the Lok Sabha during zero hour. He was countered by Vijay Kumar Malhotra (Bharatiya Janata Party), who pointed out that the Gujarat High Court had stayed the tabling of the report.
As Mr. Acharia continued to speak with support from the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party benches, BJP members trooped into the well, forcing Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to adjourn the House.
