BJP to seek legal advice on Sonia
Special Correspondent

Party may then move the Election Commission
|
NEW DELHI:
The Bharatiya Janata Party will seek legal advice on whether the positions of Chairperson, National Advisory Board, and Chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation held by Congress president Sonia Gandhi are offices of profit under Article 103 of the Constitution and could attract disqualification for membership of Parliament.
May move EC
BJP deputy leader in the Lok Sabha V.K. Malhotra told reporters on Tuesday that after getting legal advice the party could move the Election Commission to consider disqualifying Ms. Gandhi in the manner it had recommended disqualifying Samajwadi Party MP from the Rajya Sabha, Jaya Bachchan, for holding an "office of profit." Her position as Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council was held by the Commission to come under the category "office of profit."
Earlier, at a meeting of the BJP parliamentary party chaired by L.K. Advani the party was critical of the way the parties in the United Progressive Alliance were disrupting parliamentary proceedings on the Banerjee report issue. Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan briefed MPs on the situation in Assam.
