MADURAI : Vadamalayan Hospitals here have come out with a novel community scheme, `Oor Koodi Udavuvom,' to perform two heart surgeries every month for school children. The public can donate old newspapers to save two little hearts. To collect old new papers, National Service Scheme volunteers of various colleges will visit houses in Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, Yagappa Nagar, Tahsildar Nagar, Chokkikulam, DRO Colony, Race Course Colony, P and T Nagar, Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Vilangudi and Koodal Nagar on March 8. Residents who are interested can also deposit their old papers in the following collection centres: NSS offices of American College, Yadava College, EMG Yadava Women's College, Lady Doak College, Fatima College, Wakf Board College, Thiagarajar College and Jeyaraj Chelladurai College and Vadamalayan Hospitals. The money collected from the sale of old newspapers will be used for purchase of medicines and consumables required for the cardiac surgery. The hospital will bear the service charges while the selection of children for free heart surgery will be done by a selection committee.
