HYDERABAD: Freak summer rain lashed the city for the second time in a week on Tuesday evening. The showers were double-edged as they brought respite from the heat but drenched the public quite unexpectedly.

The rain, which measured a good 1.5 cm till 8.30 p.m., was said to have been caused by an upper air trough running across from Madhya Pradesh to the South Peninsula and across interior Karnataka. Rain or thundershowers are expected to continue on Wednesday as well.

The city, which saw clear blue skies coupled with sweltering heat for most part of the day, had the temperature plunging to the lower side of 30 degree Celsius while the skies went dark and clouds showered rain accompanied by flashes of lightning and thunder. The rain, resulting in sheets of water over several low-lying areas in Ramkote, Khairatabad and the old city, also led to traffic snarls on major thoroughfares, including Somajiguda, Panjagutta, Lakdikapul and R.P Road.

Power supply also went for a toss in some areas, including Begumpet, Ameerpet and parts of Secunderabad, according to electricity officials, who immediately went on a repair mission in these areas. MCH emergency service teams were also pressed into service.

Mango groves damaged

Special Correspondent writes: Untimely rain lashed parts of the State especially Telangana, under the influence of a trough. At some places, it was a heavy downpour for a brief spell accompanied by strong gales and winds. Hailstorm hit isolated pockets of Telangana region, damaging crops like mango which is in flowering stage.
