HYDERABAD: "Early detection and prevention" will be the theme of the first World Kidney Day to be celebrated on March 9 in response to a call by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). A. Gopal Kishan, chairman, Andhra Pradesh Nephrology Forum (APNF), told a press conference here on Tuesday that a screening camp for kidney disorders would be organised at Press Club, Basheerbagh, to mark the day. The only way to tackle the problem was by spreading awareness, early diagnosis. Forum secretary S. Krishnan said ISN was founded on March 9 over 50 years ago and thus the day was named World Kidney Day. Chronic kidney disease and major non-communicable diseases would claim 36 million lives by 2015. The only response to the pending global crisis was early detection and prevention. ISN, with over 8,000 professionals from over 100 nations, collaborates with over 65 national and regional nephrology societies, representing a total of about 20,000 professions. It provides an efficient platform for timely scientific exchanges between healthcare professionals and is dedicated to redressing the disparity between the developing and developed worlds in the research, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of kidney disease. Prashant Joshi, CEO, Mohan Foundation, was present.
