Student dies as tree branch falls on her

Sense of gloom in Maharani's College

K.G. Veena

Bangalore: K.G. Veena (18), a B.Com. I year student of the city's Maharani's College for Women, died on Thursday afternoon when a dry branch of a tree on the college campus fell on her.

Veena and her friends were going towards the college building when suddenly a huge dry branch of the peepal tree came down crashing. While her friends ran to safety, a confused Veena came under the branch which fell on her.

A severely bleeding Veena was rushed to the St. Martha's Hospital in an unconscious state. She was later taken to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosurgery, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Veena, the second daughter of Gururaj, an employee with the Department of Posts, was a lover of books and classical music, said Nagendra Shastry, one of her teachers in the college.

The college campus, which usually witnessed the light-hearted banter of students, wore a forlorn look after Veena's death. Students who knew that Veena had just then had lunch with her friends and had no clue of the tragedy that would strike her, sat in groups and silently mourned her death.

Veena was fondly looking forward to her elder sister's wedding, her friends recalled.

The High Grounds Police have registered a case.
