NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave time till March 29 to 25 lawyers of the Tis Hazari District courts here to file replies to the Court's notices to them in a contempt of court case for manhandling judges and vandalising of courtrooms in the District courts last month. A five-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice M. Katju extended the time to file replies in the matter after hearing arguments by Arun Jaitley and Abhishek Manu Singhvi on behalf of the lawyers. While extending the time, the Bench said the restriction on the entry of these lawyers within a 500-metre radius of courts or tribunals in the Capital would continue till the next date of hearing. In their submissions, the two senior lawyers submitted that the court could not deprive lawyers of the right to practice, which is conferred on them by the Bar Council of India. Taking a suo motu note of the incident on February 26, the Bench had on February 27 issued notices to these lawyers asking them to show cause why the contempt of court proceedings be not initiated against them. As many as four presiding officers were reportedly manhandled and 26 courtrooms vandalised in the incident.
