dated March 10, 1956: Dulles in Delhi

Mr. John Foster Dulles, U.S. Secretary of State, arrived in New Delhi on March 9 on a two-day visit at the invitation of the Government of India. Addressing pressmen at the airport, Mr. Dulles emphasised that there was far more of agreement than disagreement between India and the US. "Basically our two countries stand for the same objective. We differ in some matters and that is the characteristic of free people. I hope that during my stay the differences over relatively minor points will be still further reduced." Mr. Dulles said he looked forward to his meeting with Prime Minister Nehru for an exchange of views. "In our country there is nothing but the greatest regard, respect and affection for India and we also have the highest opinion in regard to your Prime Minister as one of the great men of the world."
